Mette Nadja is a Danish singer born in Hvidovre, the suburbs of Copenhagen. Her passion for singing developed in her very early years and at the age of 10 she was discovered and recruited for the Danish National Radio’s Girls Choir. She sang her way through her teenage years in the local music school and later in high school.
In 2008 she was introduced to jazz, by legendary Danish trumpet player and educator Thomas Fryland, at a preparatory course for the RMC (Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Denmark). She fell in love with the bounce of swing jazz and the joy and virtuosity of singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Sarah Vaughn. Mentored by Thomas Fryland and preeminent Danish vocalist Veronica Mortensen, jazz became her channel of expression.
Mette was accepted for the 2 years jazz program at Skurups Folkshögskola in south of Sweden, and she was granted stipendiums from Cirius Foundation and Augustinus Foundation in Denmark to support her studies.
Her eager to learn more and discover music from all corners of the world brought her to Jazz Institut Berlin. Here she studied music from several continents but in particular the tradition of swing and bebop mentored by artists such as Judy Niemack, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen, Tino Derado among others.
Alongside singing she developed a strong passion for percussion playing and had the privilege to study 2 years of Brazilian and Afrocuban percussion with Javier Reyes as a part of her bachelor program. She finished her Bachelor of Jazz vocals in 2017.
While the old-school swing jazz has a very special place in her heart her musicianship covers a broad range of projects. Since 2016 she is singing with the Brazilian “Universal Music” group Mariana Zwarg Sexteto Universal featuring some of the greatest musicians of Brazil, supported by Hermeto Pascoal and Itibere Zwarg and touring in Brazil, Finland, Germany and Denmark.
She recently recorded her debut EP with her Danish band “Mette Nadja Quintet” set to be released in autumn 2018.
The last years she was featured at several national and international jazz clubs and festivals: Copenhagen Jazz festival, Riverboat Jazz festival, Modern Jazz Days, Roskilde Jazz days, Charlie Scott’s Jazz bar (voted best livejazz venue in Denmark 2013), ZigZag Jazz club in Berlin, Kaustinen Folk Festival in Finland, Triboz Jazz Club in Rio, Jazz nos Fundos in Sao Paulo.
In August 2015 she played her sold out debut concert at the world famous, historic jazz hotspot of Copenhagen, Jazzhus Montmatre, with Mette Nadja Quintet.
She played alongside professional award winning Danish and International musicians from all generations such as Greg Cohen, Snorre Kirk, Magnus Hjort, Jesper Løvdal, Mariana & Itibere Zwarg.
